ORJAN’s VISIT SUPPORTED BY CAS-PIFI

On Oct 11-17, Prof Örjan Gustafsson from Stockholm University visited SKLOG. This is his third time to visit GZ and it was again a very constructive, stimulating and pleasant visit as he commented. During the visit at GIG, Örjan gave two well-attended lectures pointing to two research aspects, including “Sources and optical properties of black carbon over Asia” on Oct 13 and “Sources constraints and translocated degradation of Siberian-Arctic organic matter and methane” on Oct 16. Örjan’s work is based on field observations and sampling in remote locations, i.e. Arctic and atmospheric observatories over South and East Asia, often using isotopic analysis techniques. He was excited to share recent findings in the field of aerosols and Arctic-C under climate change. Örjan also jointly supervised students together with Gan, Jun, Zhineng and Guangcai. Twelve students of our group who involved in isotopic research reported their research progress individually. Örjan contributed and discussed in deep with the students.

Örjan Gustafsson was awarded Distinguished Scientists under the CAS President’s International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI) for 2019. His tour in China was actually from 6 to 17 Oct. Apart from GIG, he was also invited to visit Prof Zheng Mei at Peking University, Prof Kang Shichang at NIEER-CAS (西北生态环境资源研究院), Prof Wang Dongxiao at SCSIO-CAS (南海所) and Junwen at Jinan University, while GIG helped with the PIFI application and is the host institute. We believe that the visit would further strengthen our academic collaboration and we expect more contacts in the near future.

Örjan was very kind to invite for dinner together at a wonderful dumpling restaurant the night before he leave. He appreciated all of us and expressed his affection for GZ. Buqing is going to visit him very soon. We wish him good luck 🙂

WASTEWATER SAMPLING IN HANOI, VIETNAM

On May 7-18, Ruiling and Liu Xin visited Hanoi for wastewater sampling under assistance of Tu Binh Minh’s group from VNU University of Science. During their stay, 5 types of DGTs were deployed and 24 h composite samples were collected at the inlet of Yen So WWTP for consecutive 7 days. They also collected composite water samples in Kim Nguu cannal and outlet of the plant. All the water samples were extracted immediately after collection every day. The sampling achieved its goals as expected.

Prof Tu Binh Minh is SCP partner in Hanoi, Vietnam. His group has interacted with us frequently since last September. Currently, we’ve successfully conducted PAS and WWTP sampling campaigns in Hanoi as we discussed in first meeting. We hope our collaborative relationship can be very long and fruitful.

SAMPLING IN HUNAN

On March 5-15th, two ladies of our group, Zhang Ruiling and Liu Xin took a trip to Jinjing, Changsha, Hunan Province for water sampling in a small catchment. This sampling campaign was designed to investigate prevalence of antibiotic use in a typical socialist new countryside (金井镇脱甲村) based on wastewater epidemiology. It’s also part of the ongoing Dongting Lake Programme. The two ladies selected 10 sites in Tuojia catchment (脱甲河流域). A total of 30 o-DGT (organic-diffusive gradients in thin-films) passive samplers were deployed for 7 days and fully retrieved, grab water and sediment samples were also collected. At one of the sampling sites, they collected 24 h composite water per day using a small peristaltic pump. They appreciate great support from Institute of Subtropical Agriculture, the CAS (中科院亚热带农业生态研究所) for guiding in the field and offering a lab at Changsha Agricultural Environment Station, the CAS (中科院长沙农业环境站). The sampling was fairly smooth and they took the opportunity to better prepare for upcoming sampling campaign in Hanoi, Vietnam.
