Kenya Visit on 4-15 August

During 4th-15th October, four people of us (Gan Zhang, Jun Li, Shizhen and Xin Liu) were invited to visit University of Nairobi for the purpose of establishing academic collaborative relationship under framework of Belt and Road Initiative “Southern Contaminants Programme”. Gan was invited to deliver a speech titled “China Education System, Role and Research at SKLOG” to students and colleagues of Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology. He received a great deal of praise as Prof Michael who is Acting Director of the institute promptly expressed strong intentions to cooperate. Shizhen and Xin demonstrated standard operation of passive air samplers. Ten PASs will be quickly deployed at 5 sites of Nairobi city which is part of air monitoring network of the project. Two students of Nairobi-U are arranged to visit GIG soon after. They will also participate “SCP training class” in November. We also visited CAS Sino-Africa Joint Research Center (SAJRC) located inside campus of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

The director of SAJRC Dr. Wang Qingfeng show us around the center.

Meet with Professor Gatari after arrival, in a nice restaurant.

First formal meeting with Prof Michael Gatari @UoN.

Short but happy talk with Vice Chancellor of UoN.

Students of UoN learn how to assemble the passive air sampler. With their participation, a PAS was, demonstratively, deployed on the roof inside campus of UoN which means the air monitoring network of the project has expanded to East Africa.

In the middle is an active air sampler from Prof Ojran’s group of Stockholm University. They have now 4-5 years of Hi-vol sampling in Nairobi.

Behind us is the great rift valley, extending 9600 Km from the Red Sea to Mozambique.

Guess, which way does water drain at the equator?

Our driver, Richard, happily showing us the coffee tree. This was the first time we saw a coffee farm.

This is the first time we’ve seen Gan collect samples.

Not far behind us is Mt Kenya (5199 m asl), the second highest mountain in Africa.

Two-day project workshop in Conghua

During 30th June and 1st July, the group organized a series of project workshop in Espring Hotel Guangzhou, proposed projects including ATMSYC (有毒有害大气污染物环境风险管理体系研究), LUR (基于土地利用回归模型的城区空气污染暴露预测智慧平台与应用) and SCP (南方污染观测与研究计划). We had the first full day of in-depth discussion on the further implementation of ATMYSYC. Invited guests include Prof. Tian Chongguo (田崇国) from Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, CAS and other key members in Project 4 and 5. They are Prof. Lai Senchao (赖森潮) from South China University of Technology, Prof. Zhang Yongbo (张永波), Prof. Liao Chenghao (廖程浩) and several researchers from Guangdong Provincial Academy of Environmental Science.

The kick-off meeting of UK-Guangdong urban innovation project (LUR) was held on the morning of 1st of July. Attended stakeholders include Prof. Chen Duohong (陈多宏) from Guangdong Environmental Monitoring Centre and Dr. Fengbin (冯斌)from Guangzhou Bojin (博进) Information Technology Co., Ltd. We developed a detailed project plan and division of work. In the afternoon, the SCP was also discussed on its compulsory tasks and optional customized studies for the countries along the 21st-century maritime silk road.

Congratulations on our fruitful achievements from this two-day event!

Workshop on cosmogenic radio-nuclides in Xi’an

On June 1-4, Zhu Sanyuan, Cheng Zhineng and Zhang Gan attended the Workshop on cosmogenic radio-nuclides in Xi’an (宇宙成因核素测量技术与应用青年学术论坛). Zhineng and Sanyuan gave talks over the audience. We also specially visited the Xi’an AMS Centre (西安加速器质谱 中心). The workshop will be a serial one, with Sanyuan and Ding Ping as council members.
