On October 28 to 31, Örjan Gustafsson visited the group. This is his second visit in the year of 2018. His family came along with him. Orjan had intensive discussions with Gan, Guangcai, Xiaofei, Yi Xin and Buqing. The visit push our collaboration much forward and made it more clearly. The advance of BPCA-based dual-carbon methodology and aerosol di-acids dual-carbon isotope methodology were highly appraised by Orjan. He also discussed with Junwen on the writing of the Malaysian Bachok Station radiocarbon paper. We went to Baiyun Mountain with his family for a nice excursion. And the kids had great first impression of Guangzhou, from the splendid Pearl River water front, to delicate vegetarian food in the ShiFangYuan restaurant. Anna, the little lovely beauty received a special gift from Gan and Liu Xin, which is a family portrait of her family in the PR waterfront. Wonderful memory.
As a gift to the National Day, Haoyu published an important paper in ES&T entitled ‘Using Polyurethane Foam-Based Passive Air Sampling Technique to Monitor Monosaccharides at a Regional Scale’. This is her first ES&T paper. Congratulations!
To be No 1! I am sure that it will be a benchmark of regional monitoring of biomass burning across the earth planet.
It was a team work . Of the study, Haoyu did the experiment, wrote the manuscript; Guangcai supervised the chemical analysis; Tian Congguo of YIC coded the computer program/model for counting fire spots within 50 km of each sampling point, based on MODIS fire products; Yu Zhiqiang helped in managing the field sampling campaign; Li Jun joined discussions and managed the field sampling; Jiaqi, Hongxin, Shizhen helped with the experiment and joined the discussions; Lidia Morawska of QUT joined the discussion and polished the text. Gan Zhang inspired and designed the study.
On May 26-27th, workshop on Environmental Monitoring Along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road took place at Room 308 of Biaoben Building, Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, CAS. The workshop was under a project of “Southern Contaminants Programme (SCP)” “南方污染观测与研究计划”, a CAS Belt & Road Initiative (中国科学院“一带一路”科技合作专项). Totally, more than 20 people participated the workshop, including two steering committee members of the project, Prof. Kevin C Jones from Lancaster University of UK and Prof. Mohamad Pauzi Bin Zakaria from University of Malaya, and six international partners, Dr. Muhammad Mansha from Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission of Pakistan, Dr. Jabir H. Syed from COMSATS Institute of Information Technology of Pakistan, Dr. Dwi Hindarti from Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Dr. Le Quang Dung from Vietnam, Prof. Md. Ahsan Habib from University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Mr. Simion Kipkorir Bartilol from University of Nairobi, Kenya. We also specifically invited Prof. Hanping Zhuang, President and CEO of Jireh Technology of China, and Miss Ming Liu, Chief Representative of Technology and Innovation at the British Consulate-General Guangzhou. The workshop mainly consists of five sessions including welcome and background introduction by Gan, participants’ introductions, roundtable discussions, group discussions and lab tour. The workshop provides a good opportunity to meet and discuss deeply with each SCP partner, thus leading an extension of the international research network on toxic chemicals from East South Asia to South Asia and East Africa.
