Shizhen’s application for this year’s NSFC general grant has been successful. She secured a new NSFC project on Assessing the organic molecular markers for tire-wear particles in the atmosphere (大气中轮胎磨损颗粒物(TWPs)及其有机分子标志物研究,42473070,2025.01 – 2028.12,经费52万元). Congratulations!
Weiru’s six-day travel in Malaysia
From August 3 to 8, Wang Weiru visited the University of Malaya per invitation by Dr. Bong Chui Wei(黄翠薇). This mobility is an element of the Research Project of the Alliance of International Scientific Organization (ANSO) – Monitoring and Risk Assessment of Air Toxicants (MORATOXA). The main goal of the visit was to promote substantial cooperation between the two sides, as well as to bring the air samples, dust samples and hair samples back to Guangzhou the base of the ANSO project. Dr. Bong and her students fully supported Weiru in the collection of the hair samples. They also demonstrated the high quality atmospheric sampling and preservation in Kuala Lumpur which are dedicated to MORATOXA. At last, a total of 21 air samples (including one field blank), 36 hair samples and 35 house dust samples were retrieved and brought back. The samples are well stored in the fridge now.

During the visit, Weiru was also entertained by Dr. Bong’s students to taste the local food, learn about the local languages and visit the zoo.
It was an efficient and enjoyable visit. We all look forward to further progress on this project soon!
Academic saloon at Zhuhai
On July 21-22, we had an academic saloon focused on Carbon Speciation and Carbon Dynamics in the Haiquanwan Resort of Zhuhai. Attendee to the academic saloon were by invitation only. A total of 20 previous and current group members joined the event. Professor Qi Shihua (祁士华) of CUG-Wuhan presided the saloon. Professor Chen Yingjun (陈颖军)of FDU gave a keynote speech on the speciation, emission and atmospheric effects of black carbon; Professor Hu Limin (胡利民)of OUC delivered a keynote speech on the organic carbon geochemistry on the continental shelf of Asian marginal seas. Each keynote stimulated a lot of comments and discussions over the topic. In the afternoon, Professor Tan Yujun (谭羽俊)of SYSU gave an introduction of his group and new progress in atmospheric halo chemistry; and Professor Lai Senchao(赖森潮) of SCUT gave a talk on his new findings in bioaerosols. On the second day, we had time to visit together the Jintai Temple (金台寺), which nicely situated at the hill top with the Huangyang Reservoir as the front view. We also visited a small old but reconstructed village, the Jiexia Village (接霞庄), where we enjoyed specially-baked chicken. The Saloon becomes a nice public platform for all previous, current group members and specially invited guests. We will make it annual and more attractive.
