One-day exploration on Wanshan Island

On July 19th, the Air-Omics Squad(爱米小分队) along with Guizhen Fang( 方贵桢) from Sun Yat-sen University investigated the marine environment monitoring station as a viable air sampling site at Wanshan island (万山岛). Upon arrival, we indulged in delicious fresh seafood recommended by Fang, savoring the island experience. Great views of the sea shore could be perfectly captured on the roof top of the sampling site.  After fully investigated, we hopped on a sightseeing vehicle and embarked on a comprehensive tour of the island. The winding roads and picturesque landscapes unfolded before our eyes, offering glimpses of the island’s natural scenery. Hope to visit here again!

On July 17th, a small group of Shizhen, Engineer Li, Linbo, Lele, Jianchu and Weiru went to the Heshan air monitoring supersite, to maintain air sampling machines on the rooftop of the station building as well as supply 40 sets of sampling materials for summer sampling campaign. Despite of the heavy rain, we five struggled in the rain to protect Engineer Li and the machines. Finally,  all the  machines were complished flow correction. We look forward to the approaching  sampling campaign.

Weiru’s Half Day in Huanghua Primary School as a Teacher

On May 31th, Weiru got involved in the activity to popularize environmental scientific knowledge to primary students, which was organized by Huanghua Primary School. That was a sunny day and kids were super cute that they put on performances including taekwondo, sing and poetry recitation. They were so brilliant that I could ignore the intense heat of summer.

Based on the story of DDT, Weiru designed a 剧本杀 game to let the students experience the whole process of scientific research, including pointing out the problem, designing sampling campaign, lab work and even putting forward controlling measurements. It was far beyond our imagination that kids at their age could easily clarifying the meaning of POPs, biodegradation and extraction (feeling proud of them!). I am more convinced that China’s scientific research will have a bright future!

Kids under the sun and buildings with pretty paintings.

Amazing taekwondo performance.

He was answering the question about how to select a representative sampling site.

They were all very concentrated and enthusiastic.
