Pilot Study in Futian Mangrove National Nature Reserve

On Jan 8th, a group of us (Shizhen, Jianchu and Weiru) went to Futian mangrove national nature reserve for pilote study. It was the first time that they need to recognize species of trees for sampling. With the help of Dr. Gao from Guangdong Academy Of Forestry, they successfully collected young leaves and old leaves of kandelia candel （秋茄）, aegiceras (桐花), bruguiera (木榄) and acanthus ilicifolius (老鼠簕), which are usually found in mangrove forests of coastal areas of Southeast Asia and southern China. Also, they collected one paired of surface water sample and sediment sample as well as two tree ring samples of kandelia cande.

The reason why mangrove is so called “red forest”: Tannins appear red when oxidized.

Happy New Year 2024!

On Dec 30th in 2023, 8 members of Air-Omics Squad, Prof. Gan, Yinjian and Bolong were gathered together to celebrate the completion of the third year of fish plan (“咸鱼”计划) in a traditional restaurant of Hunan cuisine recommended by Jibing. The swiss brown cattle is the specialty because of its tender texture and authentic taste. After eating our fill, we walk to the gymnasium for the beautiful streetscape. The streets have been decorated with appealing lamps for the approaching new year. May the bright and festive glow of the New Year lamp warm the days all the year through! Happy New Year!

New members join in! Third year of Air-Omics Squad fish plan(“咸鱼”计划) with surprises

During Dec 26-28, the Air-Omics Squad (“爱米小分队”) completed the third year of fish plan (“咸鱼”计划) with the freshman and international members: Yifan, Nigar and William. We also have Yingjian and Mengqiu with us. Under the guidance of veterans, the students were divided into groups, equipped with gloves, masks, knifes, and enthusiasm to cut the fish samples. What a richly staffed group for such meaningful programme!
