The Sampling of Salt Lakes and Playas in Northwestern and Northern Regions of China: Dream into Reality

On Dec 6th in 2023, a group of us, including Prof. Gan, Prof. Jun, Dr. Shizhen, Dr. Jiao, Zhicheng and Weiru, went on the journey to Golmud. Our marvelous ten-day journey traveled more than 10,000 km in total, streching over Qinghai Province (Qaidam Basin), Shanxi Province and Xinjiang Province(Tarim Basin) and colletcing 43 surface brine/water samples, 27 sediment samples, 19 salt  samples and 2 snow samples. We were very close to the border (cr: Prof. Gan).

The first two days of sampling campaign were for Qarhan Salt Lake (察尔汗盐湖) and Dabusun Lake (达布逊湖), which the Golmud River (格尔木河) flows into. Prof. Gan and Prof. Jun also got involved in to collect surface brine, sediment and salt samples. We also dirved to the  Chaidan Lake (大/小柴旦湖).

The rest of the sampling campaign was led by Dr. Shizhen, with the assistance of Dr. Jiao and Zhicheng. We four dirved to Xining for the appealing Chaka Salt Lake as well as Qing hai Lake. The weather was freezing and the sampling site could reach an altitude of 3817 m, raising the difficulty of sampling. However, we  overcame the difficulties as well as refueled each other! 🙂

The next site was Yuncheng Salt Lake (运城盐湖) in Shanxi. It was far beyond our imagination that we were unable to get close to the lake. We trudged through the reeds and finally collected the precious samples.

The last site was at Xinjiang Province. We arrived there with excited hearts (That was my first time of travelling to Xinjiang). Manas Lake (玛纳斯湖) and Ebinur Lake(艾比湖)were our targets. Manas Lake was an artificial lake, surrounded by factories. It took our much time to get the permission to enter. Suprisingly, we obtained a set of salt samples from one of the factories and learned the process of manufacturing salt in the modern society. Ebinur Lake was almost dried even if Jing River (精河) and Bortala river (博尔塔拉河)both flow into it. Under the circumstances, Jiao and Zhicheng walk into the middle of the lake with rubber shoes.

We spent our last day on collecting surface water samples at Sayram Lake, which was known as “The last tear of the Atlantic”. Sayram Lake was so attractive that it was more like a sightseeing than sampling site for us. However, we still take it seriously.

During the entire sampling campaign, the joy was far more than the hardship and we four reviewed every day to make sure the selected sampling sites were  worthwhile. Also, our Russian proficiency enhanced greatly thanks to Prof. Gan.  LOL. I hope the follow-up experiment would go well and make dreams become reality.

GeoBBC Progress – Passive air samples for the dry season were collected and passive air samplers for the wet season were set up

From May 10 to 12, 2023, Wang Xiao, Tang Jiao, and Zhicheng collected 1 atmospheric deposition sample (~50 L) and 48 passive air samples, which have been “working” during the past dry season. Meanwhile, they set up 1 atmospheric deposition sampler in Xinfengjiang Reservoir and 51 passive air samplers in Dongjiang River Basin (3 samplers × 17 sampling sites) for the wet season.

17 sampling sites of passive air samples for the wet season

NSFC Major Program “GeoBBC” – 2022 Annual Meeting

In April 21 to 23, 2023, the 2022 annual meeting of NSFC major program ‘Geochemical Behaviours and Environmental Effect of Black Carbon (BC) Substances (GeoBBC)’ took place in Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry (GIG), Chinese Academy of Sciences. The annual meeting was organized by GIG,  in a hybrid form of online and on-site. Wei Li (李薇), Director of the Second Division of Earth Science Department of the NSFC, attended the meeting. Specially invited guests included were Profs Shu Tao (陶澍) of Peking University/Southern University of Science and Technology, Ping’an Peng (彭平安) of GIG, Yanxin Wang (王焰新) of China University of Geosciences, Tong Zhu (朱彤) of Peking University,  Fengchang Wu (吴丰昌) of Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, and Profs Junyu Zheng (郑君瑜) of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Bo Pan (潘波) of Kunming University of Science and Technology, Dongqiang Zhu (朱东强) of Peking University, Mei Zheng (郑玫) of Peking University and Yingjun Chen (陈颖军) of Fudan University. Hongping He (何宏平), Director of GIG, Hui Tian (田辉), Director of Science and Technology Department of GIG, Gan Zhang (张干), chief scientist of the major project, as well as the key members of the project attended the conference.

Hui Tian presided over the opening ceremony of the conference. Hongping He delivered a welcome speech and issued appointment letters to the members of the Scientific Steering Committee of the project. Wei Li introduced that the GeoBBC major program meets both the major national needs and scientific frontier; and has been recognized by the entire expert team during the bidding processes. Gan Zhang made an overall introduction to the project covering the background, key scientific problems, research objectives, expected achievements and main research progress in the year of 2022. Subsequently, Jianzhong Song, Yanlin Zhang, Junjian Wang and Guangcai Zhong introduced the annual progress report of the four sub-projects, respectively. The steering committee members gave full affirmation to the project; and put forward professional and constructive suggestions on the research regions, research contents, key tools, project outcome and the integrity of the GeoBBC. The meeting is timely for further development of the GeoBBC.
