Dry Season Sampling of GeoBBC Program Achieved a Phased Success

GeoBBC Sampling in Dry Season mainly includes four stages, and the first two stages have been completed. In the first stage (from 14 Nov. to 26 Nov.), Xiaofei, Bolong and Zhicheng collected the surface water and sediment samples from the main stream of the Dongjiang River (12 sampling sites) and Qiuxiangjiang River (2 sampling sites). In the second stage (from 12 Dec. 2022 to 8 Jan. 2023), the same sampling team collected surface water and sediment samples from Xinfeng River (3 sampling sites), Daxi River (5 sampling sites), Lianping River (6 sampling sites) and Zhongxin River (8 sampling sites). In total, 36 water samples and 25 sediment samples were collected. Among which, basic water quality parameters such as pH, conductivity and ammonia-nitrogen concentrations have been determined. In addition, 28 water samples have been filtered and enriched to obtain particulate matter (PM) and dissolved organic matter (DOM), respectively. Pro. Zhang, Pro. Li and associated Pro. Zhao also participated in this campaign with strategic significance.

In the second stage, Tang Jiao and the GeoBBC sampling team set up 30 passive samplers in the Dongjiang River Basin, mainly distributed in Xinfeng County (4 sampling sites), Lianping County (5 sampling sites) and Dongyuan County (1 sampling site). Three samplers were installed at each sampling site to obtain parallel samples.

SETAC A/P FOCUS MEETING

On April 24-16, several group members including Gan, Guangcai, Jun and Jin Biao attended the SETAC A/P Focus Meeting on environmental pollution and health along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (MSR), of which the key purpose was to bring scientists from both developed countries and developing countries to discuss about and co-design research programme. We met many familiar names/faces including Tom Harner, Kevin Jones, Pauzi, Rainer Lohmann, Joan Grimalt and Lidia Morawsk etc. The meeting ended with great success, achieved all the expected goals.

In particular, the group of 4-beauties, Yazhou, Jiayi, Shizhen and Liu Xin played key roles in the organization and processing of the meeting.

And Bolong, Liu Yi, Ji Yun and Ruiling devoted greatly at the airports to welcome/guide the arrivals, very hard-working!

Inspired and cheerful discussions.

1st GOE Colloquium

On September 27, the 1st GOE Colloquium, after the academic event reform, was held in BBL.

This colloquium was mostly dedicated to Dilanka, Yi Xin, Zhao Xuan and Zhang Bolong for evaluation of their research plan, as well as to Geng Xiaofei for her mid-term PhD report.

Besides, Chen Wenwen introduced her PhD work on nitrosamines and  a plan of writing a review on nitrosamines in the environment. Leigh gave a talk on his thoughts and observations of human geography and AFNs (alternative food networks) and ecological civilization in China. Mahdi joined the group by giving a talk introducing himself and his research plan on illicit drugs and POPs in Iran.

Bolong is to work on radiocarbon analysis of methane in the air.

Dilanka, on PPCPs in Srilanka waters.

Zhao Xun, on 14C-PLFA study on biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons.

Wenwen, on nitrosamines in waters.

Xiaofei made good progress in her PhD study.

The post for this GOE Colloquium, as setting up a paradigm.
