The annual meeting was organized by GIG,  in a hybrid form of online and on-site. Wei Li (李薇), Director of the Second Division of Earth Science Department of the NSFC, attended the meeting. Specially invited guests included were Profs Shu Tao (陶澍) of Peking University/Southern University of Science and Technology, Ping’an Peng (彭平安) of GIG, Yanxin Wang (王焰新) of China University of Geosciences, Tong Zhu (朱彤) of Peking University,  Fengchang Wu (吴丰昌) of Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, and Profs Junyu Zheng (郑君瑜) of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Bo Pan (潘波) of Kunming University of Science and Technology, Dongqiang Zhu (朱东强) of Peking University, Mei Zheng (郑玫) of Peking University and Yingjun Chen (陈颖军) of Fudan University. Hongping He (何宏平), Director of GIG, Hui Tian (田辉), Director of Science and Technology Department of GIG, Gan Zhang (张干), chief scientist of the major project, as well as the key members of the project attended the conference.

Hui Tian presided over the opening ceremony of the conference. Hongping He delivered a welcome speech and issued appointment letters to the members of the Scientific Steering Committee of the project. Annual Seminar of ANSO MORATOXA Project

On November 4th 2022, the annual seminar of an international collaborative project supported by ANSO entitled “Monitoring and Risk Assessment of Toxic Chemicals in the Air (MORATOXA)” (ANSO-CR-KP-2021-05) was successfully held both online and offline on November 4th, 2022. About twenty experts attended this seminar, including the director of the State Key Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry and project leader, Prof. Zhang Gan, Prof. Ashan Habib from COMSATS University Islamabad in Pakistan, Prof. Michael Gatari from the University of Nairobi in Kenya, Dr Jabir Syed from COMSATS University Islamabad in Pakistan, Dr Bong Chui Wei from Universiti Malaya in Malaysia, Dr Parakrama Karunaratne from the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. This seminar was chaired by the project secretary, Dr. Shizhen Zhao.

Prof. Zhang Gan extended a warm welcome to the participants. He introduced the recent progress and remarkable achievements of the cooperation projects with countries along the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” by relying on ANSO and other international organizations in recent years, and summarized the concept of MORATOXA project based on multilateral projects. Moreover, he affirmed the great significance of the project in promoting exchanges and cooperation, talent training, and promoting a “non-toxic” society. Then, Dr Zhao Shizhen presented the research background, implementation plan and progress that has been made on the project. Finally, the participating experts discussed in depth the scientific rationality of the overseas cooperative sampling scheme and put forward valuable suggestions on its feasibility according to local conditions.

On the basis of the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” environmental and health cooperation network laid out by the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry of CAS, the MORATOXA project is dedicated to the ‘Green Silk Road’ consensus of the Belt & Road Initiative (BRI). The program is hosted and technically supported by Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (GIGCAS), with the following six primary key partners, and is open to more partners world-widely, including COMSATS University Islamabad in Pakistan, University of Nairobi in Kenya, Universiti Malaya in Malaysia, University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka, University of Dhaka in Bangladesh, and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Ghana. MORATOXA project focus on air toxics and human health, taking the monitoring, risk assessment and control measures of air toxics as the main research contents, and carrying out multilateral international cooperation research in typical cities in different regions/countries.Dr Shizhen Zhao presented the project background and recent progressGroup photo of participants

Seminar on Nanling and Dongjiang Expedition and Research Collaboration

On October 21, we had a seminar with researchers from Research Institute of Tropical Forestry (RITF) of Chinese Academy of Forestry (林科院热林所), School of Geography and Planning of SUN YAT-SEN University (中山大学地理规划学院) and South China Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences  (中科院植物园). This seminar mainly discussed:1) the analysis scheme of Nanling tree-ring samples acquired from Professor Wang Xu (王旭), RITF; 2) the water and sediment sampling strategy in Dongjiang area; 3) the cooperative cultivation of students with Professor Zhou Guangyi (周光益), SUN YAT-SEN University.

Many great ideas have been produced during this meeting, so fantastic! In the evening, we had a nice party.
