Prof Habib’s seminar

On Jan 29th, Prof Ashan Habib gave a speech on the topic of “industrial waste management in Bangladesh: challenges and strategies. The lecture mainly focused on the use of nano TIO2/ZnO  as photocatalysts and adsorbents in the treatment of dyeing wastewater and the POPs pollution in Bangladesh. The presentation shed light on the alarming environmental consequences caused by inadequate waste management practices in Bangladesh. Professor Habib emphasized the urgent need to address this issue to safeguard public health and preserve the natural resources of the country. Overall, Prof. Habib’s lecture provided valuable insights and measurements on tackling the challenges faced by the country.  Last but not least, Prof. Habib was given the PIFI (President’s International Fellowship Initiative) and he may stay in GIG for 9 months.

Closing the STS project on illicit drugs control

On Jan the 26th afternoon, an expert committee came to the institute for the final assessment of our STS (Sci&Technol Service) project on key technologies in illicit drugs control. The committee was led by Professor Mo Cehui (莫测辉) of JNU, joining with professors Lai Senchao (赖森潮) of SCUT, Guo Pengran of Guangdong Institute of Analytical and Testing Technology (郭鹏然，广东省科学院分析测试技术研究所) and Liu Junwen of JNU. The STS project, with collaborators from SYSU, Damo Co Ltd （大陌科技）and Hexin Co Ltd （禾仪质谱）, developed key technologies spanning from wastewater based epidemiology (WBE), passive air sampling (PAS), online VOCs analysis, stable isotopes etc to remit the critical need of the local government/police on the effective control of illicit drugs. The committee members all gave high praise of the outcomes of the project. Liu Xin helped initiating and carrying-out the project, while in the meantime brought up herself as a police lady who works with illicit drug control. Buqing prepared the technical report, Shizhen arranged the event. Despite we have decided to stop dealing with illicit drugs, we would still continue with our endeavor on wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE)!

Vahab completed his PDRF

On January 25th, Vahab made his PDRA final report over a group of professor panel members. Included in the panel were Zou Shichun of SYSU, Tang Jianhui of YIC, Li Jun, Hu Jianfang and Song Jianzhong of GIG. Vahab has been working as a postdoctoral research fellow for almost 5 years and contributed to our institute. Now he plans to go back to Iran and find a job to start his new journey.
