Academic saloon at Huanghe River Mouth

On September 12-14, we organized an academic saloon gathering many of the current and former group members and those of our intimate collaborators. The saloon took place at a wetland field research station in the Huanghe River Mouth, which was established and has been managed by the Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone (YIC) of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The event was also a element of the Environmental Geology and Geochemistry Committee of the Chinese  Society of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry. Four keynote speeches, given by Professors Han Guangxuan (韩广轩, vice-director of YIC), Guo Zhigang (郭志刚,Fudan University), Tang Jianhui (唐建辉) and Shizhen (赵时真), respectively, invoked hours of lively discussions among the attendants. We had also time slot to go into the extremely beautiful Huanghe Mouth wetland for sightseeing. We have almost fixed  the  paradigm of the partners academic saloon of the group, and we will do it one or more times every year. Before the saloon, four of us (Shizhen, Jibing, Jun and Gan) together with Professor Chen Yingjun of Fudan University, also took the opportunity to climb to the top of the Taishan Mountain, which is definitely a great challenge! I also wrote two traditional Chinese poems to record the exiting experience and what was in my heart, upon the journeys.

NSFC major program “GeoBBC” – 2023 annual meeting

On the 16 -17th of January 2024, the 2023 annual meeting on “Black Carbon: Geochemical fate and environmental effects (GeoBBC)”, a major program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), was held at the Jiayi International Hotel in Guangzhou.

Li Wei (李薇), Deputy Director of the Department of Earth Sciences of NSFC, Academician Tao Shu (陶澍) from Peking University/Southern University of Science and Technology, Academician Peng Ping’an (彭平安) from Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (GIG), Academician Wang Yanxin (王焰新) from China University of Geosciences (CUG), Academician Zhu Tong (朱彤) of Peking University,  Professors Pan Bo (潘波) of Kunming University of Technology, Zhu Dongqiang (朱东强) and Zheng Mei (郑玫) of Peking University, and Chen Yingjun (陈颖军) of Fudan University attended the meeting as seering committee members. Professor/academician He Hongping (何宏平), Director of GIG, Tian Hui (田辉), Director of Science and Technology Department of GIG, and Zhang Gan (张干), chief scientist of the major project, as well as the project leaders and backbones attended the meeting.

The opening ceremony of the conference was chaired by Tian Hui and a welcome speech was delivered by He Hongping. In her speech, Li Wei addressed that the major project was approved in 2021 and started in 2022. The project has been running for two years, with outstanding works, rich achievements and good progress. In addition, Li Wei suggested that the project should further be in line with the national demand and the “dual-carbon” strategy, strengthen target-oriented design, and face mid-term inspections. Zhang Gan gave a general introduction to the project from the aspects of project background, major research progress in 2023, and research plan for 2024. Then Song Jianzhong, Zhang Yanlin and Wang Junjian reported the annual progress of each sub-project, respectively.

The steering committee members fully agreed with the importance of the project. At the same time, constructive suggestions were made in terms of research scopes, innovative breakthroughs and project integrity, followed by in-depth discussions among the project leaders and backbone members. In response to the questions and suggestions raised by the attending experts, the project leaders and key members had a lively exchange and discussion, which helps with the next-year research plan.

NSFC Major Program “GeoBBC” – 2022 Annual Meeting

In April 21 to 23, 2023, the 2022 annual meeting of NSFC major program ‘Geochemical Behaviours and Environmental Effect of Black Carbon (BC) Substances (GeoBBC)’ took place in Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry (GIG), Chinese Academy of Sciences. The annual meeting was organized by GIG,  in a hybrid form of online and on-site. Wei Li (李薇), Director of the Second Division of Earth Science Department of the NSFC, attended the meeting. Specially invited guests included were Profs Shu Tao (陶澍) of Peking University/Southern University of Science and Technology, Ping’an Peng (彭平安) of GIG, Yanxin Wang (王焰新) of China University of Geosciences, Tong Zhu (朱彤) of Peking University,  Fengchang Wu (吴丰昌) of Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, and Profs Junyu Zheng (郑君瑜) of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Bo Pan (潘波) of Kunming University of Science and Technology, Dongqiang Zhu (朱东强) of Peking University, Mei Zheng (郑玫) of Peking University and Yingjun Chen (陈颖军) of Fudan University. Hongping He (何宏平), Director of GIG, Hui Tian (田辉), Director of Science and Technology Department of GIG, Gan Zhang (张干), chief scientist of the major project, as well as the key members of the project attended the conference.

Hui Tian presided over the opening ceremony of the conference. Hongping He delivered a welcome speech and issued appointment letters to the members of the Scientific Steering Committee of the project. Wei Li introduced that the GeoBBC major program meets both the major national needs and scientific frontier; and has been recognized by the entire expert team during the bidding processes. Gan Zhang made an overall introduction to the project covering the background, key scientific problems, research objectives, expected achievements and main research progress in the year of 2022. Subsequently, Jianzhong Song, Yanlin Zhang, Junjian Wang and Guangcai Zhong introduced the annual progress report of the four sub-projects, respectively. The steering committee members gave full affirmation to the project; and put forward professional and constructive suggestions on the research regions, research contents, key tools, project outcome and the integrity of the GeoBBC.
