Goldschmidt 2019 at Barcelona

On 17^th -24^th Aug, the famous Goldschmidt conference took place in Barcelona, Spain. Luckily we got two abstracts accepted this year, and contributed one oral presentation and one flash talk. It was said that about 7000 people registered for the conference. It was the first Goldschmidt for Wenwen and she gave an excellent talk on source interpretation of nitrosamine at the Pearl River Delta. For the old man, Biao, it was his 6^th Goldschmidt conference and 4^th oral presentation at the same conference. He gave a talk about stable carbon isotope fractionation associated with triclosan’s photodegradation, and he met his good old friends from the CSIA community in the session. During one lunch break, we visited Prof. Gan’s good friend, Prof. Joan Grimalt (Academician, Spanish Council of Scientific Research, CSIC). Together with our great friend, Eva, she showed us the lab and invited us for a wonderful lunch under a tree. That was an amazing day!

In the spare time, the “old town” tour organized by Pere was very impressive, and the tour ended with a long and nice walk along the famous street La Rambala (流浪者大街). The church Sagrada Familia（圣家堂）was still under construction, and Biao was very happy to see the new part of the church built since 2014. That was totally a nice week at BCN, mixed with science, nice weather, city, culture and food. I guess Wenwen can NOT agree more. 😊

Another visit to Xinxiang

On August 21, Gan was invited to give a talk on the ‘大气污染的健康效应和防控措施高级研修项目’ in Xinxiang (新乡）which was organized by Henan Normal University as a special training course supported by 人社部。The title of his talk was ‘Progress in research on HAPs and its management in China’ （有毒有害大气污染物（HAPs）及其管控研究进展）. It was my second visit/talk to/in Xinxiang this year (last time on May 24). I was very happy to see many garnet trees with fruits on on the campus of Henan Normal University, and afterwards educated by Xaofei that it has been the city tree of Xinxiang!

NCEC 2019

On Aug 15-18, The 2019 National Conference of Environmental Chemistry was held in Tianjin, organized by Nankai University as part of the celebration of the University’s 100 anniversary. It was a huge conference with about 8,000 attendants. Gan gave two keynote talks on two sessions, respectively. The titles of the talks were ‘Source-sink processes of POPs in Asia’ (POPs session) and ‘POPs in the urban atmosphere of China’ (Emerging Contaminants session). Gan was very happy to meet Prof Mei Surong (梅素容）of Central China University of S&T (华中科技大学同济医学院）who is a member of the ATMSYC project. he was also happy to see a PhD student, Gong Xinying（龚新颖）, of whom Zhao Zhen was one of the supervisors, in Nankai University. Former group members, Zhao Zhen, Zhang Yanlin etc also attended the Conference. Of course I met Kevin and Zhang Hao, again, and Kevin and I had an afternoon chat with coffee followed by drinks with Professor Liu Congqiang of Tainjin-U. Kevin was also invited to gave a keynote talk on the POPs session. And it was amazing that his and my talk fit extremely well and were highly supplementary with each other on the topic of global fate of POPs, although we did not know that both of us will be attending and same session ! Buddy no doubt!
