On July 26, a group of us, Jin Biao, Chen Wenwen, Liu Xin and I paid a half day visit to the Pearl River Council(珠江水利委员会). We were welcome by Ms Zhang Guangyan who is the head of the research office of the Council. Liu Xin gave a talk on wastewater based epidemiology showing some nice result from Guangzhou, Sri Lanka and Iran. Chen Wenwen reported her recent advance of her work on N-nitrosamines in the Pearl River. Jin Biao interpreted the concept of persistent and mobile organic compounds (PMOCs) to the audience who are from various departments of the Council and its affiliated organizations. The talks were followed by a detailed discussion and exchange of information in particular future activities and reform in the Council including the establishment of a research institute on environment and the hand-over of groundwater management from geological survey to the Council. Lots of collaboration opportunities!

Nanjing summer school
On July 12, I was invited to visit Nanjing University of Information Technology and give a class on a summer school (SS) organized by Zhang Yanlin (章炎麟). I gave a class entitled ‘POPs: from Chemistry to Geochemistry’. During the 2 days in NUIT I met professors Tao Shu (陶澍), Liu Congqiang (刘丛强), Li Fangbai(李芳柏) etc who were also ‘teacher’ of the SS. We drank a lot and the trip was enjoyable thanks to Yanlin and his colleagues’ good organization. I also had a view on Yanlin and Cao Fang (曹芳)’s aerosol isotope lab which is well equipped and managed. I came to know that there were more than 20 research students working in his group, while realizing that I am ‘grand-teacher’. Attended the SS are also students from 俊文’s group (JNU) and 瑞杰’s group (GXU).

More than 140 students joined the SS.

ATMSYC workshop and visits at wuhan
On June 20-22, Shizhen, Li Jun, Jin Biao and Gan paid a visit to Wuhan. Xu Yue joined.
We first attended a workshop held by ATMSYC on the prioritization and list of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) for nation-wide control in China, which is a major task of ATMSYC. The discussions and ideas came with the workshop has been very successful and useful in the following name-listing job. One consensus is that we would provide 3 HAPs lists, one for nation-wide major source emission control, one for environmental health study/assessment in cities, and one as a need-to-care ‘theoretical’ list. The hostresses of the workshop, Professors Wang Youjie (王友洁) and Mei Surong (梅素容) invited us a feast welcome with Creyfish (小龙虾) in the famous ‘Liang-liang-zheng-xia’ (靓靓蒸虾) restaurant at Hankou (汉口).
On the next day, we payed a short trip in Wuhan University to see the landmark historic buildings of the university, guided by Hairong. Very memorable! We then went to China University of Geosciences (CUG) to meet Professor Qi Shihua (祁士华) and his team. We talked about potential joint collection of groundwater in the Jianghan plain (江汉平原)for a multiple purposes study on PFCs and DBC etc. Shizhen was happy to see Xing Xinli (邢新丽) and her son who she met in Lancaster. We also visited a source emission test lab by Professor Kong Shaofei (孔少飞), which was well established and looks impressive.
It has been 2 busy days, but indeed quite fruitful and enjoyable!
