On August 8-10, a group of us including Liu Xin, Zhang Ruiling, Zhang Gan, Chen Wenwen, Mahdi and Dilanka attended the 11th International Symposium on Environmental Geochemistry (ISEG) in Peking Universe. The symposium was organized by Professors Tao Shu(陶澍) and Zhu Dongqiang(朱东强). Gan was invited to give a keynote speech entitled ‘Development and Applications of Radiocarbon Analysis Techniques for Tracking Atmospheric Organic Species in China’. The talk promoted our works on radiocarbon analysis of BC/BrC/Di-acids/IVOC (naphthalene), and demonstrated radiocarbon analysis as a powerful tool in tracing the sources of atmospheric organics. Other group members all gave poster presentations, a bunch of ‘waters’! On the eve of the opening ceremony day, we are able to gather in a restaurant ‘Friday’ for a drink.

SETAC A/P FOCUS MEETING
On April 24-16, several group members including Gan, Guangcai, Jun and Jin Biao attended the SETAC A/P Focus Meeting on environmental pollution and health along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (MSR), of which the key purpose was to bring scientists from both developed countries and developing countries to discuss about and co-design research programme. We met many familiar names/faces including Tom Harner, Kevin Jones, Pauzi, Rainer Lohmann, Joan Grimalt and Lidia Morawsk etc. The meeting ended with great success, achieved all the expected goals.
In particular, the group of 4-beauties, Yazhou, Jiayi, Shizhen and Liu Xin played key roles in the organization and processing of the meeting.
And Bolong, Liu Yi, Ji Yun and Ruiling devoted greatly at the airports to welcome/guide the arrivals, very hard-working!
Inspired and cheerful discussions.

SAMPLING IN HUNAN
On March 5-15th, two ladies of our group, Zhang Ruiling and Liu Xin took a trip to Jinjing, Changsha, Hunan Province for water sampling in a small catchment. This sampling campaign was designed to investigate prevalence of antibiotic use in a typical socialist new countryside (金井镇脱甲村) based on wastewater epidemiology. It’s also part of the ongoing Dongting Lake Programme. The two ladies selected 10 sites in Tuojia catchment (脱甲河流域). A total of 30 o-DGT (organic-diffusive gradients in thin-films) passive samplers were deployed for 7 days and fully retrieved, grab water and sediment samples were also collected. At one of the sampling sites, they collected 24 h composite water per day using a small peristaltic pump. They appreciate great support from Institute of Subtropical Agriculture, the CAS (中科院亚热带农业生态研究所) for guiding in the field and offering a lab at Changsha Agricultural Environment Station, the CAS (中科院长沙农业环境站). The sampling was fairly smooth and they took the opportunity to better prepare for upcoming sampling campaign in Hanoi, Vietnam.
